As mixed martial artists we run into a rut when it comes to strength training. L-Glutamine can act as an agent that prevents your body from eating your muscles. What activity can eat away at muscle? Heavy Cardio? Jiu Jitsu? Sparring? L-Glutamine is used for many things outside of athletics, but we’re only interested in the relevant benefits.
Benefits
- Faster recovery time because of cell volume maintenance and hydration
- Anti-catabolic agent (mentioned above)
- Increases growth hormones
- Aids your immune system – can’t train if you’re sick right?
The best part is there are no known side effects. Pick up L-Glutamine from any place that sells supplements. I bought L-Glutamine from GNC and take 2 pills before my workout and 2 pills after.

I have a shake after my workouts called Isopure Mass and it has L-glutamine mixed in. Do you think thats enough or should I be getting more by taking pills or the powder?

Boris,
It’s tough to say with L-Glutamine because I don’t think there’s a recommended dosage. I know my shake says it has L-Glutamine in it, but I still take L-Glutamine supplements. I figure my body will piss out what of it I don’t use.
